Roofing work may involve height, vehicles, tools and other hazards. Anyone carrying out work must be fit to work and able to do so safely.
1. Purpose
BSure Roofing and Building Ltd is committed to protecting employees, subcontractors, customers and the public. Roofing and building work is safety-critical, and impairment from alcohol, illegal drugs, misused medication or other substances is not acceptable.
2. Who this policy applies to
This policy applies to employees, workers, subcontractors and anyone carrying out work on our behalf, at customer premises, company premises, vehicles or any other work location.
3. Required standards
- Do not report for work or remain at work while impaired by alcohol or drugs.
- Do not possess, use, supply or sell illegal drugs at work.
- Do not consume alcohol during working time, including breaks, unless expressly authorised for a non-operational company event.
- Use prescribed and over-the-counter medication responsibly and follow medical advice.
- Tell the appropriate manager confidentially if medication or a health condition may affect safe working, driving or use of equipment.
4. Safety-critical work
No person who may be impaired may work at height, drive for work, operate plant or tools, handle hazardous materials or perform any other safety-critical task. Work will be stopped and the person moved to a safe location where there is a reasonable safety concern.
5. Raising a concern
Anyone who believes that they or another person may be unfit for work should report it immediately to the person supervising the work. Reports will be handled sensitively and shared only where necessary for safety, investigation or legal obligations.
6. Support
Anyone who believes they may have a dependency or substance-related problem is encouraged to seek help at the earliest opportunity. Where reasonably practicable, the company will consider appropriate support, medical guidance and temporary adjustments, while maintaining site safety.
7. Investigation and action
Concerns will be assessed fairly and proportionately. A breach may lead to removal from site, suspension of safety-critical duties, investigation, or action under the relevant employment or subcontract terms. Serious misconduct, including supplying illegal drugs or knowingly placing others at risk, may result in termination and referral to the police where appropriate.
8. Review
This policy will be reviewed periodically and following a significant incident, legal change or material change in working practices.
